Can Steven Gerrard only play deep?

Footballer Direct News: Steven Gerrard

After his success last season Gerrard was moved to the top of the diamond of midfielders for Liverpool’s trip to Bulgaria. He is a fantastic player but didn’t seem able to get into the match to his full capacity. The top of the midfield diamond is a position that requires bursts of pace and constant pressure but the England star is 34 years old now and its starting to show.

Pundits can only see him having a few more years at world-class level in a deeper midfield role but Rodgers clearly felt that he needed him closer to the front.

He wasn’t the only one who took a bit of heat from that match. Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet's mistake allowed the hosts to take the lead has attracted criticism at the same time as many have jumped to his defense.

Sterling on the other hand is seen as Liverpool’s brightest light. He can cross with both feet and slips through the opposition effortlessly. This heat map shows his movement in the game and how much aggression he showed in his positioning.

Luis Suarez attracted a lot of negative attention, even having to leave English football, because of his biting antics in the recent World Cup. The now Barcelona striker is quoted as saying: ‘It is like an impulse, like a reaction… I believe I am on the right path now,’ and admits that he is seeking help before his return to football after a four month ban when Barcelona will face Real Madrid.

Footballer Direct: Caulker Wrongly Accused

Footballer Direct News: Caulker Accused of Stealing Cheese

Premier league footballer Steven Caulker, the £8 million defender of Queens Park Rangers, was handcuffed by police on suspicion of stealing a £1.85 tub of Philadelphia cheese from a Tesco store in Weybridge, Surrey. Caulker, 22, earns around £42,000 a week and was later released by police with no charges.

Witnesses from across the street had immediately recognised the footballer and reportedly found it hilarious.

A Surrey police spokeswoman said that no crime had been committed and that "there was some confusion between staff about payment." This confusion led to officers jumping out of a nearby squad car and handcuffed the English national squad defender in front of stunned on-lookers.

QPR nor Caulker have made a comment on the matter as yet. Find out more about Footballer Direct!

Stronger after Suarez: Footballer Direct

Footballer Direct: Gerrard; "Stronger after Suarez"

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool have become stronger over the summer despite the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona.

Footballer Direct is every serious footballer's essential online platform. It offers an opportunity to be spotted by decision makers in the world's most popular sport.

The Uruguayan forward was a revelation at Anfield last season scoring 31 league goals in 33 appearances and winning both the PFA and Football Writers' Player of the Year awards.
Barcelona paid Liverpool a reported fee £75m to secure the striker's services and Brendan Rodgers has taken advantage of the influx of cash by bringing in nine new players, with Italian forward Mario Balotelli becoming the latest player to sign for the club on Monday.
Gerrard acknowledges the team will miss Suarez but is confident the overall depth which has been added to the squad will make the club stronger as a whole.
"There is no doubt it we are going to miss a player like Luis Suarez," he said. "He is a world-class player.
"But what the manager is done is he has strengthened in other areas and we have also recently signed Mario Balotelli.
"Hopefully the new signings along with everyone who has been here for a long time can help soften the blow of losing Luis and we can show everyone that there is life after him and we can be successful without him."

Footballer Direct: Rooney Takes Captaincy

Footballer Direct Roundup: New England Captain

Footballer Direct is every serious footballer's essential online platform. It offers a chance to be spotted by decision makers in the world's most popular sport.
Rooney was recently appointed Manchester United's new skipper by boss Louis van Gaal and had been widely tipped to take the armband for country as well as club.
Steven Gerrard relinquished the role when he announced his retirement from international duty in the aftermath of England’s disappointing World Cup campaign in Brazil.
"I gave it a lot of thought but Wayne Rooney is an obvious choice for his honesty, commitment to the cause, his experience, the fact he has already captained England in the past," Hodgson said.

"It would be unfair to some of the other players like Joe Hart and Gary Cahill, who are experienced players in the international team and play at very, very big clubs, to say that Wayne was the only choice but I think for most people it was Wayne's time, it was his moment and it would have been a mistake to overlook him."

Germany V Algeria Review

Germany V Algeria Review

World Cup 2014

The infamous botched free kick by Muller.

Towards the end of the match, with Algeria pushing Germany hard, and they won a free-kick just outside the opposition box.

It looked like a real opportunity to either have a shot on goal or get a cross in for some of the bigger men in the German side, such as Per Mertesacker.

Bastian Schweinsteiger ran over the ball, then came Thomas Muller to do the same but the serial World Cup goal scorer slipped, much to the hilarity of all watching.

Then came the actual chip, a woeful effort from Toni Kroos that the Algeria defence easily cleared, but looked to be aimed to Muller who was by this time still running into the box.

It looked like an “Epic Fail” but it has since been established by a German journalist (big surprise) that the free-kick routine was practised in training. Many do not believe this German journalist.

It has been labelled as the worst free-kick ever and one of the biggest bloopers in World Cup history – yet the reaction from the German camp after the game against Algeria confirms that it was all planned! I'm not convinced...
